Adult Sailing Program
Friends of the Museum Boating Programs
The
Friends of the Museum, North Carolina Maritime Museum, has developed
boating programs to provide various on-the-water training options to
members and non-members interested in outdoor recreation. With the
successful Junior Sailing Program as a foundation The Friends has
expanded their boat related program offerings.
Program offerings include Adult Learn to Sail,
Beaufort Oars,
Sea Scouts, and
Traditional Boat Handling.
The
Friends boating programs offer instruction for beginner,
intermediate and advanced sailors including traditional sailing
craft as well as racing and cruising strategies and instructor
training. The
Beaufort Oars offers participants the chance to row with an
enthusiastic group using the 34’ Crestwood Gigs built at the
Museum’s WaterCraft Center. A new sliding seat club has been
formed that allows members to row club owned shells. The Sea Scouts Ship 98 is an
educational resource program of The Boy Scouts of America for co-ed
youth 15-20 years of age.

One Day Adult Learn to Sail
Age Group: 18 & up
Price: $60 ($85 without Friends membership)
In this one day (five hour) course you will practice all the points
of sail, tacking, jibing, anchoring and docking. Instruction will
take place aboard one of the cruising boats owned by The Friends.
These are keel boats, 22’ to 30’ in length, that provide a
(relatively) dry and stable platform on which to learn boat handling
and sail trim.
As we keep the numbers onboard down to no more than 5 students
everyone gets intensive coaching from our instructors.
Traditional Boat Handling Class
Age Group:
16 and up
Price: $60 ($85 without Friends membership)
Hands-on water time will be the emphasis. Throughout the day (9:00
a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with a lunch break) students will spend most of
the class time on the water, with the opportunity to compare the
handling characteristics of a variety of traditional small craft.
Differences in construction, hull shape and historic use will be
discussed using boats included in the ongoing Traditional Boat
Program. Spritsails and other traditional sail plans will be used to
cover rigging and sail handling.
Private Sailing Lessons are available by
appointment. Private lessons are ideal for those individuals or
families that want special attention or have limited time. This is a
great way to get an introduction to the sport of sailing, or to
practice your skills and gain confidence on the water. The fee for
private lessons ranges from $25-$60 per hour (depending on the boat)
(2 hour minimum) and we provide the
boat, all safety gear, and expert instruction. Call
Brent at 728-2762 for more
information.
