About
Gigs
The
Crestwood Gig is a 34' LOA, 32'8" DWL, 5'6" Beam, designed by
Joseph Dobler N.A. of California.
There is an increasing interest in rowing
for recreation and competition. The US Rowing Association which
has long fostered sliding seat, shell type craft, now has a
section concerned with fixed seat open water rowing. The
Crestwood Gig provides a vessel for such activity.
The Crestwood Gig is designed to address the needs of clubs
desiring to build inexpensive and easy to build boats. They were
designed with the idea of function before form.
These boats filled the needs of the
Beaufort Oars Rowing Club early on by allowing the group to get a pair
of boats in the water and rowing as quickly and inexpensively as
possible.
The construction is Taped Seam Plywood, making a boat that is
strong, durable, permanently tight and relatively lightweight.
It is made from low cost materials and does not require skilled
craftsmanship.
The original oars were 14' long,
constructed of spruce with a modern spoon blade. More modern
carbon fiber oars have been obtained as they are much lighter
and easier to handle.
The Beaufort Oars became a pilot program for the Crestwood Gig,
and many clubs from Maine to Florida to California have
contacted the group to hear about the progress of our program
and learn more about the Crestwood Gig.
