Scouts
Ship 98, the Sea Scout Ship “Lookout”, meets in Beaufort and is chartered to the Friends of the North Carolina Maritime Museum.
The
Sea Scout organization, founded in 1912, is one of the oldest
program areas of the worldwide Scouting
movement. Since 1972 the program has been open to boys and girls
ages 14-20 and it is currently one of the most rapidly growing
programs for high school aged young people. As a member of the
BSA, the following Vision Statement guides the Sea Scout
organization:
The
Boy Scouts of America is the nation's foremost youth program of
character development and values-based leadership training.
In
the future Scouting will continue to:
-
Offer
young people responsible fun and adventure
-
Instill
in young people lifetime values and develop in them ethical
character as expressed in the Scout Oath and Law
-
Train
young people in citizenship, service, and leadership
-
Serve
America's communities and families with its quality,
values-based program.
The
aims of Sea Scouting are further specified in their own words:
"Sea Scouting is organized to promote better citizenship
and to improve members' boating skills and knowledge through
instruction and practice in water safety, boating skills,
outdoor, social, and service experiences, and knowledge of our
maritime heritage.
"Most
Sea Scouting units, called ships, have sailboats or power
vessels for learning to sail and cruise. During the boating
seasons, every member has a chance to try his hand at the
tiller, to trim the sails, and all members are taught safe and
proper methods of handling boats. Sea Scouts also learn the
meaning of buoys and lights, how to take advantage of wind and
tide, and how to drop anchor and approach a dock. Day, weekend,
and long cruises are held for all ship members."
One
of the most important aspects of the Sea Scout program is its
emphasis on leadership training for Scouts. As with other
Scouting programs for older teens, the Scouts themselves are
expected to run their own program with adults providing only
advice and supervision. Thus, the program of an individual ship
will be shaped by the interests of its members and may include,
in addition to sailing; camping, kayaking, canoeing,
snorkeling/SCUBA, and other aquatic and land-based activities.
What
kind of activities do Sea Scouts do? Some of the interest of
members of Ship 98 are sailing, SCUBA, motor boating, kayaking,
rowing, climbing and camping.
What
does it cost to join? The annual cost of joining Sea Scouts is
$11.00. Ship 98 also assesses dues of $3.00 per month.
Other expenses for activities will be met with fund raisers.
Where
and when does the unit meet? Ship 98 meets every Monday night,
6:00 PM (April through October) and 7:00 PM (October through
April).
