A
New Center For An Old Tradition
Building on an old Outer Banks tradition, an exciting new
program is underway sponsored by the North Carolina Maritime
Museum and The Friends of
the Museum. The
Museum is expanding the Beaufort Oars gig program to include
sliding seat rowing shells, starting with recreational singles.
A new dock, boathouse and boat racks have been built at
the Museum’s Gallant Channel Annex providing rowing
opportunities for adults and youths to explore Beaufort’s rich
ecosystem of islands and bays.
The
development was triggered by the arrival in town of Marj Martin
Burgard, a US Rowing certified coach.
Marj is the mother of Dizy Brown who established the Oars
in 1991 using an adaptation of the six-oared Cornish gig.
Gig rowers currently row three times weekly out of the
Gallant Channel site.
Marj
is also the widow of Arthur Martin who designed the Alden Ocean
Shell; the world’s largest selling recreational shell.
Both gigs and shells take advantage of Taylor’s Creek,
one of the finest protected rowing sites in the southeast,
running right along the Beaufort waterfront.
Anyone
interested in rowing single shells can join the new sliding seat
program upon payment of the annual dues.
The program’s future plans also include developing
similar programs at the Manteo and Southport Museum facilities
plus establishing high school rowing programs throughout the
Outer Banks.
